Kindergarten: Weeks 1 & 2

I think the highlight of week 2 was having daddy walk her to school. Cliff was off two days during this week and took over bus duty. The first day he picked her up from the bus we all went. She ran straight past me and into her daddy's arms. He had to tell her to go give me a hug.

They made a little crown.

And did some coloring, cutting, and pasting.

The hands were actually on one page but my scanner broke the hands up into two pictures.

And, yes, the Humpty Dumpty picture is here twice. She did it twice during the week. It was a cut and paste project.

Sometimes her pictures come home without being colored all the way. I'm not sure if she runs out of time or is just being chatty whiles she works. She has not gotten her name under the "So Sad" sign yet so I take that as a very good sign that all is well at school. Julia came home with her first school cold. She still managed to go to school all week. Some of the school meals she likes and there are some she doesn't. But her school does offer fruit and salad bar with every meal and she likes those both. We are working on getting her to remember to bring her sweater home. She forgets every once in a while.

Julia's First Day of Kindergarten: Part II

I picked Julia up from school. As we walked past the bus stop she started to cry a little. I asked her why she was crying and she said that she wanted to ride the bus. I tried to take her back and see if she could ride the bus home but we were too late. So I guess she's ready.

Here is her artwork from the day.

This picture below is a necklace she made.
She had to cut out the paper herself.

Her first day as she described it to me:

They colored a paper. (The first picture above.)
Then sat on a colored rug while they listened to a song and their teacher read an ABC story.
Then recess. She played on the swings and the slides.
Back on the colored rug and teacher read another story. She couldn't remember what it was about.
They colored their welcome necklace. She used blue scissors to cut her paper.
Then it was time for lunch. She ate her chocolate first and then some grapes. (I had packed a small twix in her backpack to eat with lunch.)
After lunch they took a walk to meet their parents.

Julia's First Day of Kindergarten

We picked out her clothes the night before, put a snack for recess and a lunch treat in her backpack, Cliff gave her a father's blessing for the school year, I put her after school snack in the fridge to cool, and all the cameras had charged batteries. It took forever for Cliff and I to fall asleep last night. Julia seemed ready to go last night. A little excited and a little nervous.

When I went to her room to wake her up she was already awake. I made her scrambled eggs and chocolate milk for breakfast. We curled her hair a little, packed up the car and headed off. Cliff was able to go into work late today so he could go with us.

The ride to school

As is normal with this age, getting her to give a decent smile is hard.

Her teacher had a coloring page for the students to work on while we took pictures and said our goodbyes. Julia did not cry. I wanted to but managed to take a few deep breaths. I'll let my tears fall later when I'm not distracted by dirty dishes and laundry.

Julia already met two new friends.

And yes, we are "those parents". This is a big moment to document.

Have a great school year Julia!
